12 Months to Happier Habits is a self-help journal that uses interventions from therapeutic models within psychology such as behavioral activation with a specific focus on also exploring the writer's relationship with everyday habits. It uses prompts to focus on triggers and coping mechanisms with additional emphasis on the elimination or inclusion of habits monthly for self-exploration.
Each month the writer chooses a habit they wish to eliminate or add to their life while focusing on ways to improve the likelihood they will stick to their goal over that month. At the end of the month the writer chooses what their relationship with that habit will be moving forward in their life while entering the new month focused on a different habit. At the end of the year the writer continues to reflect on their choices.
This model of exploring a habit is also based on the harm reduction model related to substance use in which the goal may not be to abstain from something forever, but rather to focus on how to decrease harm to one's life by reducing or changing the level of said use to be more conducive to one's mental health and life goals.
